South Coast Bikes has built its reputation over more than 20 years on a simple but compelling promise: customers never have to leave home to get their bike serviced. The Brighton and Hove-based specialist collects bikes directly from customers’ doors, transforms them in its workshop, and delivers them back – a free, seamless service that has always been the business’s defining USP.
For much of that time, this promise was fulfilled by a pair of petrol-engine vans, converted with custom racks on the back to carry bicycles. But time catches up with everything, and as the vehicles approached the end of their working lives, South Coast Bikes director Paul Topham knew it was time to rethink.

“We used to have two older Daihatsu Hijets, which were great,” says Topham. “But they were 10 to 15 years-old, coming to the end of life. And we were also very aware that they didn’t really fit with our business ethos: sometimes we’d turn up at a customer’s house in this slightly smelly, battered petrol van. We were very much aware that electrification was the way things were going. But we needed a quite specific vehicle to fit our racks.”
The Search for the Right Replacement
Finding a like-for-like electric replacement for a converted micro pickup isn’t as simple as walking into a dealership. Topham did his research thoroughly, test-driving options across the emerging micro electric vehicle market before settling on one from JLC EV.
The decision came down to a combination of the vehicle itself and the people behind it. The company’s proximity to South Coast Bikes’ Brighton base was a practical advantage, and the quality of service and impression made by the team sealed the deal.
The result has exceeded expectations.

More Than Just a Van
The micro electric van now covers the full collection and delivery run for South Coast Bikes, sweeping from Saltdean in the east to Shoreham in the west, and up to the A27 corridor. A full round can cover up to 50 miles; on quieter days, considerably less. With a real-world range of up to 60 miles, the vehicle is well matched to the demands of the round, and the stop-start nature of door-to-door collection and delivery plays directly to the strengths of its electric motor.
The operational benefits are clear: charging on-site keeps running costs close to negligible, and the simplicity of electric power means the vehicle is easy and enjoyable to operate. But for Topham, the impact has gone beyond the purely practical.
“The micro electric van has been great,” he says. “It really delights people: it’s distinctive, customers love it, and it fits with our brand perfectly. It costs virtually nothing to run, it’s great fun to drive, and the impression it makes on customers is a big plus point. Compared to rocking up in an old petrol van, it’s a completely different statement about who we are.”
A Brand Statement on Wheels
South Coast Bikes’ whole proposition is built on providing a premium, convenient service – one that respects customers’ time and reflects a genuine care for their experience. An electric vehicle, compact and distinctive, reinforces that message every time it pulls up outside a customer’s home.

Where once the collection van was simply a means to an end, it is now an extension of the brand: clean, modern, and in tune with the values of a customer base that overwhelmingly cycles for leisure, fitness, and sustainability. In a city like Brighton and Hove, where environmental consciousness runs high and cycling culture is deeply embedded, that alignment matters.
The van’s compact dimensions also make it ideally suited to the urban and suburban geography it covers: nimble enough for the residential streets and seafront runs that make up the bulk of South Coast Bikes’ patch, with enough payload capacity for the custom bike racks that remain central to how the vehicle is configured.
Twenty Years of USP, Renewed
What strikes Topham most is how naturally the micro electric van has slotted into a business model that has remained fundamentally unchanged yet successful for over two decades, while simultaneously refreshing what that model says about the business today.
The free collection and delivery service was always what set South Coast Bikes apart. The micro electric van hasn’t changed that. It has simply made it better: more economical, more sustainable, and more in keeping with the image of a business that takes its craft, its customers, and its environmental footprint seriously.
For JLC EV, South Coast Bikes is a compelling demonstration of what the right micro electric vehicle can do for a small business: not just replace an ageing workhorse, but actively enhance the way that business presents itself to the world
